Sausages with Warm and Spicy Slaw

AKA "another Shwalsh easy and delicious dinner option"

A few years ago this dish made a regular appearance on our dinner table.  It was from Chatelaine and we found it yummy and also really quick to throw together.(and I have blogged before about how  I am a huge fan of the come together quick dinners.) While brainstorming dinner on Sunday night we remembered this gem and it was awesome. .. here you go:

  • 4 Italian sausages  (I have tried with various kinds of sausage, all are delicious.  I usually cook more so that we have some for lunches/G is a big meat eater)
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 green cabbage  ( I just buy a bag of the ready shredded coleslaw cabbage!)
  • 1/2 tsp hot chili flakes (obviously you can spice this up as much as you like)
  • 1/4 tsp ground cumin
  • 2 tbsp  each white vinegar and granulated sugar ( I usually use less sugar)
  • 2 green onions

1) slice each sausage into bite sized pieces and fry over medium heat with a little bit of oil.  Cook til browned, then add water, cover and cook for about 5 more minutes until cooked through

2)Add cabbage and everything else. Stir so that the spices dont get trapped up top (made that mistake before booo)  Cook for around 7 minute or until the cabbage is as tender as you like it.

3)Serve and enjoy!

The original recipe said it would be good served with mashed potatoes, but I just serve it by itself and we are both quite full. It also packs well to take for lunch the next day. (double bonus!)

It's that time of year again....

20120222-090007.jpg
I loooove roll up the rim! I have never won anything more than a coffee, but as with the lottery, I give myself a few moments to day dream. What would brighten my morning up more than a cup of Timmies? Winning a car or a pile of money once I'm done!!! Has anyone you know ever won something fantastic?

Princess and the Pea

Three months ago G and I went through a really involved process to buy a new bed at  The Brick.  We lay on every bed in the store and spent a lot of time choosing the one we felt was just right with us.  After 4+ years of sleeping on an Ikea mattress that was wreaking havoc on my joints I was more than excited with the promise of this new bed.  It arrived and felt pretty firm, more firm that we remembered from our on site trial.  However we thought maybe it just needed a chance to break in so we have slept on it for three months with minimal change.  Luckily the Brick allows a one time mattress swap out (woohoo) So last week we went back to The Brick and went shopping again.  I thought it would be a quick task, but I am notorious for underestimating how long something will take.  We lay on every mattress in the store and I couldn't decide.  Garret can sleep on a concrete slab without any complaint so he left it up to me.  It took about 45 minutes until I was sure but I am excited to report that next weekend our new mattress gets delivered.  (It's funny the things I get so super excited about now a days!)

Hope everyone has an awesome family day long weekend...anyone doing anything exciting?

ShWalshDonald Christmas Card

[caption id="attachment_471" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Merry Christmas from the ShWalshDonald Family"][/caption]

Last weekend we went to Haliburton to Regan's uncle's cottage.  One of the best things about our friends Regan and Meg are that they totally get the point of a photo shoot.  We hopped on an old sleigh wearing some straw hats we found in one of the bedrooms and posed!  Afterwards we thought it looked a bit like a Christmas card. So don't be surprised if G and I send this one out next year.

Happy Happy birthday babe. I hope that 28 is your best year yet. We have some pretty awesome things on the horizon, so I think this should be a year to remember! Thank you for always getting up to check what makes bumps in the night, for making me breakfast smoothies and for taking care of what I have deemed "boy" jobs. Thank you for always laughing with me and never saying no when I ask you to dance. You make me so happy and you make me so crazy but I wouldn't have it any other way. I am so glad that we have got to spend your past 4 birthdays together....here's to a million more.

Thank you for being born.

Love you foreva eva,
